Short History of Silver Spring, Maryland
Silver Spring, Maryland was founded based on beauty and love, rather than necessity. In 1840, Francis Preston Blair (for whom the Blair House in Washington, D.C. Is named) had just spent his first year as editor of the Washington Globe. The Globe was the official recognized publication of the then-powerful Jackson political party...which ultimately became the modern Republican party.
It's reported that, on a sunny day in that year, Mr. Blair and his beloved daughter Elizabeth were taking a stroll near what is now modern day Acorn Park. They came across a fresh, beautiful spring flecked with pieces of the mineral mica – which shimmered in the sun like silver.
They were so taken with the beauty of the area that the Blair family subsequently purchased the land on which the spring flowed (along with a sizable portion of the surrounding countryside) for the family's summer home. As was the custom of the day, he named his estate. He choose the name of Silver Spring. He would spend more than two years building a fine, expansive, 20 room home on the property.
During the Civil War, a frequent guest at Silver Spring was Abraham Lincoln - President of the United States. The President would simply relax there away from the pressures of office or, often, played a then-common form of “town ball” with Francis Blair's grandchildren.
Over the last century and decades, Silver Spring has grown. Today, it is not a city or county; it is defined by boundaries determined by the Unites States Census Bureau (boundaries which were unilaterally re-drawn by the bureau in 2010). Over 70,000 people live in the Silver Spring community. The area has had many cycles of downturn and revivals. The latest revival started to gain traction and deliver tangible results which are evident today.
In 2005, downtown Silver Spring was awarded the Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence silver medal. The award, presented by the Bruner Foundation is to recognize "places that are developed with such vision and imagination that they transform urban problems into creative solutions."
A major part of the revitalization of downtown Silver Spring occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the building of a series of four new high-rise office buildings. This was a consolidation of the headquarters of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) – an organization that every American relies upon for the latest and most comprehensive weather information. NOAA also operates an auditorium and science center at its location.
In 2007, The New York Times noted that downtown was "enjoying a renaissance, a result of public involvement and private investment that is turning it into an arts and entertainment center"
The population of Silver Spring is quite diverse which leads to a great variety of culinary destination restaurant and entertainment events. With a short stroll now in downtown, you can easily find delicious food to fit any taste.
Because this area is so close to Washington, D.C. And has been established for such a long time, there are many historical places to visit. And with a moderate year-round climate, exciting new amenities and plenty of quality-of-life attributes, Silver Spring would make a perfect destination or home.
