City Preview

Columbia, Maryland is a Census Designed Place (not incorporated) of about 100,000 people in a planned community that once had an operating dairy farm. When the idea of this planned development  was formed, the planners purchased almost all the land for the development secretly.

This stealthy approach method has been used for scores of developments across America. Perhaps the best known-under-the-radar property acquisition resulted in the creation of Walt Disney World in Florida. During the period in which this land parcel was put together, nobody even had an idea that it was happening – total blackout.

Some rumors about the Columbia, Maryland development process did make the rounds even as it remained, largely, a mysterious and deep secret.

Unlike the glamorous Florida theme park, the Maryland residents imagined the new site to be the home to a large medical laboratory or a large compost heap. What started out as wild – if banal – speculation by area residents, did, indeed, morph into something glamorous in it's own right.

As Columbia was planned, built and matured toward the vision of the founders, it blossomed into a robust community that was named by CNNMoney magazine  as the #4 best place to live in the U.S.

The community today has integrated various levels of residential dwellings including private single family homes and different apartment schemes. Columbia combines places to live with places to work, receive health care, go to school and enjoy recreation amenities; all planned far in advance of construction. The community even had – at one time – it's own health care insurance and providers program just for residents of this area.

Today, residents of the area have an excellent medical resource: Columbia is home to the newly renovated Howard County General Hospital, which is affiliated with Baltimore's famous and acclaimed Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Many Columbians find a wide range of jobs available locally with the U.S. federal government. Federal institutions nearby include the National Security Agency and the Applied Physics Laboratory. There are also several U.S. Department of Defense installations and R&D facilities nearby.

Columbia has been (and is) home to quite a wide range of accomplished and notable Americans, including -

  • Jayson Blair, disgraced former New York Times reporter
  • Zach Brown, linebacker for the NFL's Tennessee Titans
  • Michael Chabon, Pulitzer Prize winning author
  • George Colligan, New York–based jazz pianist
  • Cristeta Comerford, White House Executive Chef
  • D'Monroe, Broadway and Off-Broadway actor
  • Greg Hawkes, keyboardist for new wave band The Cars
  • David Hobby, professional photographer and author of the Strobist.com lighting blog
  • David Howard, professional football player, 7th Round Pick (241 overall) by the Tennessee Titans in the 2010 NFL Draft
  • Stephen Hunter, Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic and author
  • Kerry G. Johnson, award winning caricaturist, cartoonist and children's book illustrator
  • JJ Kincaid, New York City radio personality, got his start DJing at the Columbia Ice Rink
  • Robert Kolker, author and editor
  • Laura Lippman, award-winning mystery author
  • Steve Lombardozzi, Jr. professional baseball player
  • Suzanne Malveaux, CNN reporter
  • Edward Norton, Academy Award–nominated actor and grandson of James Rouse, made his professional debut at age 8 at Toby's Dinner Theatre in the Town Center
  • Elise Ray, Olympic gymnast
  • James W. Rouse, urban planner, real estate developer and philanthropist; grandfather of actor Edward Norton
  • Christian Siriano, fashion designer and winner of the fourth season of Project Runway (born in Columbia)
  • Linda Tripp, central figure in the Monica Lewinsky scandal
  • Terry Virts, astronaut

In an interesting real-life development, the Rouse Company was purchased in 2010 by the Howard Hughes Corporation (yes, that Howard Hughes) which now controls all of the Columbia, Maryland assets.
