Baltimore Movers City Preview
If you are moving to Baltimore, this will give you a few ideas about what you can expect. With outstanding architecture, scenic parks, fascinating historic sites, and world-class museums, and historic and contemporary sports legends, Baltimore has everything to offer visitors and residents alike.
Although many people only know Baltimore as the home of the most recent (2013) Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens, the city has a long, rich tradition of winning. Baltimore had made its mark in the sports world long before the Ravens. This was the birthplace of “The Bambino” (Babe Ruth). Ruth's pro baseball career started with the (then minor league team) Baltimore Orioles but he quickly made his way to the Boston Red Sox. Most people know the Babe as a home run king, but he was also an exceptional pitcher, once pitching a 13 inning scoreless game (a record of achievement that still stands today).
Baltimore was a pivotal city in the War of 1812 and could be credited with saving the United States from, again being ruled by a foreign power. Only 30 years after the end of the Revolutionary War, the United States once again found itself in open conflict with Great Britain. Baltimore’s most noted landmark, Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, is directly linked to the September 1814 Battle of Baltimore and to Francis Scott Key’s writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Stop by this shrine, climb to a high point, and belt out your version of our national anthem.
With all the historical sites and a history of sports achievement, it is easy – from a distance – to overlook Baltimore's long and robust cultural achievements. Historically a working-class port town, Baltimore has sometimes been dubbed a "city of neighborhoods". There are 72 designated historic districts traditionally occupied by distinct ethnic groups. This diversity has also been responsible for the city's successful arts community and events.
Each year the Artscape takes place in the city in the Bolton Hill neighborhood, due to its proximity to Maryland Institute College of Art. Artscape styles itself as the "largest free arts festival in America". Each May, the Maryland Film Festival takes place in Baltimore, using all five screens of the historic Charles Theatre as its anchor venue.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is an internationally renowned orchestra, founded in 1916 as a publicly funded municipal organization.
One thing you will not want to overlook is the incredible dining that is available here. Baltimore Magazine, in 2013, rated a new Greek restaurant - Ouzo Bay – as the #1 dining experience. The review stated it's wonderfully glamorous and glitzy atmosphere and highlighted the charcoal-grilled whole fish that is flown in daily. Entrees can cost up to $75 at Ouzo Bay.
One review for Woodberry Kitchen includes high praise: “For serious foodies in Baltimore (and beyond), eating at Woodberry Kitchen is a seminal experience. From the remarkably refurbished mill building to one of the city’s most consistently inventive menus, there is always something pleasing to look at and something spectacular to taste.”
You will want to savor the city's famous signature crab cakes as the centerpiece of a wonderful meal. In 2012, USA Today (Travel) proclaimed Faidley's Seafood (Inner Harbor section) as the place serving the absolute best crab cake. USA Today says, “Faidley's is the capital of the dish, the heavyweight champion of lump crustacean. It is the second-oldest establishment in Lexington Market, the largest physically, and the only one that refused to make changes during the last major renovation of the building.” It's quite a place.
Baltimore seems to have all the ingredients for a world class tourist or resident experience; distinct neighborhoods, great sports, soul-lifting arts events, and dining almost to die for.
This American city moves us. Come to visit and see if it moves you.
