One place in Arlington (County), Virginia is so seared into America's collective psyche that it is hard, if not impossible, to imagine a thriving, bustling commercial and wonderful residential area instead of thinking of the Arlington National Cemetery.

It is also hard to imagine that the most revered resting place for our fallen service members grew out of a simple act of vicious, personal revenge against one man - Robert E. Lee. When the Commonwealth of Virginia passed a secession bill to separate from the Union, Lee enlisted in the Confederate Army. Unfortunately, he had to resign his commission in the Union Army to do so. Many considered this a treasonous act.

Arlington National Cemetery was established during the Civil War on the grounds of Arlington House, which had been the family estate of Confederate general Robert E. Lee's wife Mary Anna (Custis). Although the grounds around Arlington House were quite suitable for a military burial site, It was also the home of the leader of the armed forces of the Confederate States of America; Denying Robert E. Lee use of his home after the war was considered (at the time) a valuable political consideration.

The preeminent military resting place for America's fallen began as a petty political act. Even the land for the cemetery was tainted. It had been seized by the Union government due to an alleged overdue tax payment. After the war, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the land had been taken illegally without due process and ownership was restored to the family who then sold the burial grounds back to the U.S.

Arlington is also home to the The Marine Corps War Memorial (also called the Iwo Jima Memorial), the Pentagon Memorial, the United States Air Force Memorial, and the Pentagon.

If you are fortunate enough to live and work in Arlington, Virginia, then you are in one of the most economically robust areas in America. In October 2008, BusinessWeek ranked Arlington as the safest city in which to weather a recession. In fact, while the nation's unemployment peaked at 9.5% in 2009 during the economic downturn, the percentage of unemployed in Arlington at the same time was less than half of that – topping out at 4.2%.

The federal government is the area's largest employer by far. The second largest employer in the city/county is the county government (although still far behind the U.S. Government). In all, close to 30% of all jobs in Arlington are with the federal, state, or local governments.

The federal government, in addition to the nation monuments and memorials, has a large commercial footprint in Arlington. The area is home to the headquarters of -

  • the Air Force Office of Scientific Research,
  • DARPA,
  • Drug Enforcement Administration,
  • Foreign Service Institute,
  • National Science Foundation,
  • Office of Naval Research,
  • Transportation Security Administration,
  • United States Department of Defense,
  • United States Fish and Wildlife Service,
  • United States Marshals Service,
  • and the United States Trade and Development Agency

Arlington, Virginia is a modern city with deep roots in the history of our country. The mild climate, economic stability and outdoor recreational amenities make this one of the best places in which to live in the USA.
