Annapolis Movers City Preview
If you are moving to Annapolis, the following paragraphs will give you a few ideas about what you can expect. Outstanding features of this city include its layout and large number of 18th century original structures.
Most early American towns were laid out in a form of a predictable grid with all streets crossing each other. According to Archeology in Annapolis, the layout of this city “followed the Baroque style used in the rebuilding of London in 1666. This particular style attempts to create visual illusions based on planned vistas, and convergent and divergent lines of sight culminating in monumental architecture, as a means of creating symbolically charged spaces.”
One symbolically charged space was allotted to St Anne's, the Episcopal Church, regarded as the spiritual center of the city. Formerly a part of the Church of England, it was originally supported by taxpayers. The importance of this structure was signaled by the traffic circle around it and all of the roads leading from all directions directly to it.
St. Anne's was an important part of society in this seaside city. The settlement was founded as “Providence” by Puritan in exile from Virginia. In 1694, soon after the overthrow of the Catholic government, Francis Nicholson moved the capital of the royal colony (then called “Anne Arundel's Towne”) and renamed the town “Annapolis” after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway, soon to be the Queen of Great Britain. Annapolis was incorporated as a city in 1708.
The second great symbolic place in Annapolis is the beautiful Maryland State House. Its importance was also highlighted by another traffic circle with roads radiating from it. This building is the oldest state capitol still in continuous legislative use and is the only state house ever to have served as the nation’s capital; 1983-1984. Today, it is still one of the most beautiful structures in the area and worth a tour.
Moving around in Annapolis is easy and fun.
The past is still alive in this thriving city. Annapolis has more original 18th century structures standing than any other city in the United States (City of Annapolis website).
Perhaps the most famous institution located here is the undergraduate college of our country’s naval service. The Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Founded in 1845, the campus – called the “Yard” - is worth a visit.
Annapolis has plenty of modern places to see. Here you will find the National Cryptologic Museum (NCM). It is an American museum of cryptologic history that is affiliated with the National Security Agency (NSA). The first public museum in the U.S. Intelligence Community, NCM is located just two blocks from the NSA headquarters at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.
When you move to Annapolis, be prepared for somewhat wet climate. The area has hot, humid summers, cool winters and more than its share of precipitation. The city is located just 29 miles east of Washington, D.C.
This is a great place for spectator sports with over 32 varsity sports from which to choose. The excitement of Navy Sports has a national following that is unsurpassed. If you have never experienced a game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, you are missing one of the great traditions in college sports. And with the excitement of so much NCAA action available, Navy Sports in Annapolis is a must addition to your visit and a great lifestyle perk.
This part of Maryland offer a moderate climate, plenty of sightseeing, historical structures and traditions, along with modern entertainment options such as a casino. It's a wonderful place to live.
Come to visit and see if it moves you.
