Alexandria, Virginia City Preview

Welcome to one of the most significant population centers surrounding Washington, D.C. Like many other areas near the Capitol, Alexandria has a rich and storied past.

You have probably never heard of Light Horse Harry Lee. He was born in Virginia and became an important military officer during the Revolutionary War fighting against the Loyalists and Great Britain. He was present in Yorktown, VA during the surrender of Cornwallis that ended that war.

Harry Lee came from a lineage of important citizens who served the colonies and the newly formed USA in many ways.  But, you may know quite a bit more about his son, Robert Edward Lee (Robert E. Lee) who commanded the Confederate Army during the War of Northern Aggression, also known as the Civil War. Robert E. Lee had a boyhood home in Alexandria.

The historic center of Alexandria is known as Old Town – originally laid out in 1749. Old Town is situated in the eastern and southeastern area of the city along the Potomac River. With its concentration of specialty/exclusive shops, unique and spectacular restaurants, and antique shops, it is a major draw for visitors. Like Old Town, many of other Alexandria neighborhoods are compact, walker-friendly, and historically significant. It is the seventh largest and highest income independent city in Virginia.

Due to its proximity to Washington, D.C. And the Potomac River,  Alexandria has made – and continues to make – valuable contributions to the nation's strategic military and governmental efforts. On November 12, 1918, the U.S. Navy began constructing a torpedo factory in Alexandria, named the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station. Over the next five years it was responsible for the manufacture and maintenance of torpedoes and subsequently served as a munitions storage area until World War II. As the demand for weapons dramatically increased during the war it resumed production activity and the factory was substantially expanded with ten new buildings.

Following the war, the factory languished for decades and, ultimately became just another old, decrepit building. Thanks to a community visionary and funding from the city, the building was transformed into a modern mecca for artists. The Torpedo Factory Art Center opened in the mid 70s with about 140 artists. Today, the Factory draws over 500,000 visitors a year.

In general, the arts community is a major aspect of life here.

Although the city has no major league team to call its own, baseball returned to Alexandria in 2008 with the formation of the Alexandria Aces, a part of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League. This league is a summer developmental program for players from NCAA schools.

However, the largest youth sport in Alexandria is soccer with almost 2,500 players ages 2–18 who participate in Alexandria Soccer Association play.

Alexandria's vibrant arts scene, chic shopping and award-winning restaurants has made it an extraordinary city to live and visit. Alexandria has recieved the following designations and awards partial list):

    •    The Washington Post proclaimed, “The Most Well Read City In America.”
    •    ArtPlace named Alexandria as one of “America's Top Art Places, 2013.”
    • trumpedted Alexandria as one of the “Top 10 Downtowns.”
    •    Virginia Living called Alexandria as one of  “10 Favorite Cycling Destinations.”
    •    Amazon noted this city as one of the “Top Most Romantic Cities in the US.”
    •    Convention South said – “Best Foodie City in the South.”

An excellent place to live.

The workforce in Alexandria, like most nearby communities, is mainly comprised of professionals working in the federal civil service, in the U.S. military, or for one of the many private companies which contract to provide services to the federal government. One of Alexandria's largest employers is the U.S. Department of Defense. Others include the Institute for Defense Analyses and the Center for Naval Analyses. In 2005, the United States Patent and Trademark Office moved to Alexandria.

Alexandria, Virginia is an exceptional community know for a rich heritage, a robust arts community, and extremely livable neighborhoods. It's a wonderful place to call home.
